All kids will bring home their projects over the weekend with the scoring guide to score themselves. I would appreciate you looking at the scoring guide with them and giving them any pointers you might see necessary. I am attaching the scoring guide and project outline to this email in case anyone forgets to bring it home.
Many of the kids have been looking for random odds and ends here at school to finish out their projects. At this point, many students have been unsuccessful in finding them and might have better luck finding them at home. Their final projects will be shared with the class on Monday as well as their multi-grade level "Biome" on Tuesday. Please make sure that the projects come back to school Monday. Weekly Homework is due each Wednesday. Students are asked to practice math for 10 minutes per day and read for 20. Green homework tickets are available at school to turn in.
Homework due Monday, 10/2
This week's homework is meant to spark discussion, and does not have to be written out in "short constructed response" format. Just jot down some notes to share in class! Discussion Questions Our EL unit "Overcoming Learning Challenges Near and Far" features stories of children who lack access to books and education. According to the National Education association, 90% of public schools have libraries. Springwater belongs to the 10% that does not. How has this impacted the way you find books to read? Where do you go for books? Do you buy, borrow, or go online? How do you learn about new titles? How do you find enough books that are compelling, diverse, age-appropriate, and "just right" for you? Do you choose your own books, do your parents choose for you, or do you choose together? Share some of your personal challenges and successful strategies for finding good books... without a school library and school librarian to make it easy. The kids have a quick two page assignment with affixes. There are 10 words that they need to break down into prefix/root/suffix. This is due tomorrow.
Just a quick reminder that our second weekly homework is due tomorrow. All students need to bring back is the green ticket as evidence of the work that hey have done for the week.
Thanks for your support! Each child has chosen a piece of non-fiction text that they have been reading in class. This weekend they need to write a short response to a prompt given in class about the non-fiction book that they are reading. The students were to cut out the prompt and glue it to the top of a piece of lined paper. They stapled to the front of that paper the expectations for their response.
This will be due Monday at the beginning of the day. Have a great weekend! Here is the assignment: homework_prompt_el_unit_1_lesson_7.pdf This Wednesday our first weekly homework is due. The students brought home a green sheet with three weeks worth of homework tickets. This Wednesday, you will need to cut one off, sign it and send it back in with your student. No evidence is necessary of the work that they did this week, your signature is enough! Thanks for your support!
Our first Module for literacy is called Overcoming Learning Challenges Near and Far. Our two guiding questions are:
Reflect on these questions. What do they make you think about? Is education helpful or not helpful? Why? Is learning ever difficult? Give some examples. You can sketch and/or write your reflections. Homework If your child was in class with us last year, you'll notice we've changed our homework structure. We now have two types of homework. Category 1: Ongoing Homework 20 minutes of reading and 10 minutes of math practice are expected daily. These daily 30 minutes are meant to be constant, predictable, and habit-forming. Reading can be independent, the child reading to a parent or sibling, or a parent or sibling reading to the student. Variety is the spice of life, so change it up from time to time! Math can be Dreambox, flash cards, online games, story problems you find online, or best of all, real-life math applications. We will occasionally suggest a specific online practice or handout a paper worksheet in class. Again, do what works best for your child, and don't get stuck in a rut. Each Wednesday, we will collect a "homework ticket" that has a parent signature verifying that your child completed the expected 30 minutes of daily reading and math. No reading log, no checking Dreambox minutes, no cursive notebook to tote back and forth. Your child will bring home a supply of these tickets at the end of this week to last all trimester. Signed tickets translate to points for the Homework Hustle, a homework participation contest we'll explain to the kids. Ongoing homework goals
Category 2: Assigned HomeworkHomework assignments are given instead of the ongoing homework (doing both would be ideal, but isn't required). Homework assignments focus students on current learning and are necessary for the next day's classwork. Assignments can come any day of the week, but won't be an everyday thing. We'll send you an email update whenever a new assignment has been made. Sometimes there will be a written component to turn in. Other times, there will simply be a question to discuss. Not doing the homework assignment is similar to being absent for a lesson. Assigned homework goals
